Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the incident made him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
