Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
