Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
