The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
